With Glitch now closing, we should take this opportunity to consider a few things. First, what did they do wrong that we can do right, so we don't have to fail like they did? (Failing in other ways remains an option.) Second, what did they do right that we want to copy?

My first thought is that Glitch made their game way too expensive to run and maintain. They required paid-MMO levels of infrastructure, but they couldn't possibly take in paid-MMO levels of money.
Kingdom of Loathing points the way to do better here. They're set up to operate within their budget.

Two items to note here: (1) Avoid building a Flash app (Apple signed the Death Warrant, unfortunately) (2) Know when to fold 'em (i.e. "know when to walk away". When the show's over, go home.)
Bravo to them for owning up to reality.
