Yes, colors are very flavorful. I still think colors -- particularly the most expressive colors, like Red -- are dangerous to our thought process when we've just come from Skyrates and its rich colorscape, and are trying to differentiate our world. By all means we should introduce colorschemes for the factions -- once we have a very clear picture of each faction's identity. Red's a very powerful color. We're surrounded by it, we're enticed by it, hell it's the first color our eye notices in a group. It's also a primary color, which gets it extra points. There aren't too many colors, really, to work with before you start getting silly. Three primary, three secondary, six tertiary... Red makes a statement. It's bold and loud and demands attention. We think of fast cars, fire, and violence when we see red. Passion, anger, very vibrant emotions. For those of us who endured the Cold War, the color Red has lots of different meanings too. The truth is someone is going to come up with a faction revolving around military action, and undoubtedly it will almost demand the Red color. So how does this sound: Let's design a military themed faction, with the prospect that it will be using the color Green instead. "Sons and daughters of the sky! You are needed! Lawlessness and piracy rule the skies, while creatures from hell itself command our waters! Rise up, and take back the freedom of the skies! Rise up, and join ____________!" Once we break the first mold, the rest should be easier.

Next up, Shadow Hand. Merchantile monopoly group that inherited the shady legacy of pre-cataclysm industry barons. They dress in black. Black suits, black caps, black gloves. Black black black. Hides in dark alleys better, generates the aura of mystery and intrigue, and folks know not to look when they see movement in an alley. Tisk-tisk. Someone's not been studying their Terry Pratchett. Grey or dark greens work better when hiding in those alleys. Just ask Havelock Vetinari.

Green... headgear... armed forces... British Commandos?Just as long as the military faction isn't purple. If they insist on faction-theming their helmets, you'll never hear the end of awkward jokes at their expense.

Purple can be a diplomatic corp. Or white. I like the prospect of White for a diplomat corp. How about orange for a science themed faction? It's a nice International Danger color, plus it'd show up great if they fell in the water. Let's just hope the Kraken is colorblind.

I have still some reading to do about this whole project, but to me it seems that there would be more than three factions, since the cataclysm broke people apart and isolated many different groups. Although I also don't want to see it become to complicated, so take this as a simple side-suggestion.
I wholeheartedly agree that we should stay away from SR faction colors. They'll remind us too much of what the SR factions were like, and we are trying to start anew, after all. I'm wondering if we should consider names like "The Crystal Palm" and "The World Anchor" (being careful not to make them sound too much like names of taverns--i.e. The Blue Goose), which would stay away from colors altogether. A thought.
