[02:55] matejcik when does the meeting start? is it even today?
[02:56] Burrito_Loco No se
[02:56] matejcik says 3-ish ... which is what in my time?
[02:57] matejcik 10 or 11 or something
[02:57] matejcik that's a reasonable timeframe
[02:57] Austin_J Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Ellington doesn't show today. There's a big airshow here in Houston today, IIRC.
[03:03] Talon hahahah
[03:03] Talon sigh
[03:03] Talon ellington
[03:09] Kario Well, we've managed the last few meetings without him.
[03:09] matejcik wellp, ellington says it's in three hours
[03:11] Talon he did?
[03:16] matejcik oh, no, it was not ellington
[03:16] matejcik IT WAS YOU
[03:16] matejcik like you expect me to read names of e-mail senders
[03:56] Ellington lo!
[03:57] Ellington AND BEHOLD!
[04:00] Ellington let us meet
[04:01] Kario Okay, let's see, who's still not here? No Tod and no MC.
[04:03] Tod hey - is the meeting not for another two hours?
[04:04] Ellington should be now, methinks
[04:05] Ellington unless i got the wrong day/month/year again.....
[04:06] Tod I got an email an hour ago that said the meeting would be in three hours.
[04:06] Ellington waqy to mess up, Tal
[04:06] Ellington Is MC on the general email? hrm
[04:08] Tod either way, will brb
[04:08] Ellington Anyway. I belive trade was on the agenda
[04:09] Kario It is. But I want to get to that last.
[04:09] Kario Everyone will have opinions and we won't get to anything else if we start with that.
[04:09] Ellington What else then?
[04:11] Ellington I assume Loco is coding.. I assume Matej wont fail his class around coding...
[04:13] Tod okay, back
[04:13] Tod what's the plan?
[04:17] Ellington Tod, AJ, any issues with the art?
[04:18] Austin_J Other than technical problems on my end, not really.
[04:22] Kario That's something I kind of want to talk about, at least briefly.
[04:22] Kario Though I'm starting to wonder how many of the folks 'here' are actually watching.
[04:22] Talon wha's a plan?
[04:23] Talon also, ell
[04:23] Talon according to YOUR email
[04:23] Talon last week
[04:23] Talon it's 3pm
[04:23] Tod I'll have some sketches to show you guys in a minute. I've been loaning my computer to my roommate past few days, and hadn't had a chance to scan 'em until just now.
[04:24] Talon yay sketches
[04:26] Ellington go on keyo
[04:26] Kario Well, okay.
[04:27] Kario So, one of the things that's going to be important to getting our game to look cohesive is to have a consistent style within the game.
[04:27] Kario HAS the art team divided labor yet?
[04:27] Austin_J We've done some ad-hoc stuff so far, but nothing official.
[04:30] Austin_J Part of it is that we only have a vague idea of what we're gonna need, so all our efforts have been effectively concept art.
[04:31] Tod yeah, things have been all over the place as everyone works out where we're going to go with this, so doing final stuff hasn't come up, yet.
[04:31] Tod I have put together this week's sketches, if you guys want me to link to them, now.
[04:32] Kario Okay. It's not something we need to decide yet, but it's something that's going to need to happen at some point.
[04:32] Kario I don't know if you want to decide among yourselves or have it put to a vote or what, but start considering strengths and weaknesses and consider how you want to work that.
[04:33] Tod it might be good to know that sooner than later.
[04:33] Austin_J I;m particularly interested in if we're gonna have any need for 3d graphics work, since that's my main specialty.
[04:34] Tod also, I've had the concern that since my work is traditional media and not digital, what stuff would be best for me to focus on for final work.
[04:35] Talon nods.
[04:37] Kario All my experience has been in pure writing, not in art or game design. I defer to the judgment of others on this count.
[04:38] Tod I think we'll probably want all of the island views to be in the same style, all of the on-the-island-scenes to be in the same style, the player character art, etc. So I guess to divide things up, we need to figure out how much time the different artists have, and divy things up in chunks.
[04:39] Talon mhm
[04:39] Talon the 3D models will prolly be useful re the actual planes themselves
[04:39] Austin_J Well, on the 3d front, assuming we do make use of it, we'd have to find a comprimise between cost, how good it looks, and ease of use (the latter effecting how quickly I can crank stuff out). Sketchup is great on cost, moderate on looks, and is an utter pain in the ass for making aircraft models. It's possible, just difficult.
[04:39] Talon concept art is helpful for overall direction
[04:39] Talon and art is, you know, art, which is art
[04:40] Austin_J I'm well-trained on AutoCAD, but it's really expensive, and not exactly meant for the kind of thing we'd be using it for.
[04:41] Austin_J I'm planning to look into other options on cheap (or at least cheap-ish) modeling and rendering programs.
[04:42] Burrito_Loco Blender, wings3d, etc?
[04:43] Austin_J Yeah. I'm planning to take a few pokes at Deled3D this week. Although, I also need to get a better setup for modeling work, I don't have the stuff I learned on anymore.
[04:46] Kario I hear buzz about Maya, but I suppose I'll have to ask the folks I know who do rendering.
[04:46] Kario Anyway, just something to keep in mind for future steps. In the meantime, we are mostly doing concepts.
[04:46] Austin_J Maya's an Autodesk program, therefore expensive.
[04:47] Austin_J And it's also more for animation, for static models we'd probably go for 3d Studio MAX from the Autodesk family.
[04:48] Burrito_Loco Yeah, it's a few hundred even for a student
[04:50] Austin_J The thing with Autodesk products is that they're top-dollar, but you get very good support, and extremely powerful tools to do pretty much whatever you want, as long as you know the arcane series of commands to do it.
[04:52] Eskay heyooo.
[04:53] Eskay Did y'all have a meeting in here?
[04:53] Burrito_Loco We're meeting. I think. I dunno.
[04:54] Kario We are. And concepts!
[04:54] Kario What do people have for capital cities?
[04:56] Austin_J That'll be Tod and Tommy's department, I think.
[04:58] Ellington ooh... capitals... muy important.. didnt think of that
[04:59] Ellington whats the current design plan for factions?
[04:59] Tod well, I've just been working on the sketches of different views of the islands I sketched up, previously, if you guys want to see and if that jogs any ideas for capitals.
[05:00] Tod I can also put on my worldbuilder hat and jump into that discussion, if I can
[05:07] Burrito_Loco Can you?
[05:08] Kario Ahem.
[05:08] Kario Where was I?
[05:09] Burrito_Loco Murdering an innocent hobo
[05:11] Kario They have the best whiskey. I love myself a good bourbon.
[05:11] Burrito_Loco Need you some of that Mad Dog?
[05:12] TommyChong waking up at 5 makes me want to throw up
[05:12] TommyChong also hello
[05:13] Tod If I may, even
[05:14] Kario Proceed. The last thing I have was me asking for concepts.
[05:16] Tod Here's pictures - www.thestorydragon.com/adventure/sketches.html
[05:16] Tod including prior two island sketches. The undeveloped pic on there is an idea I had for a city inside the island, like a strip mine kind of set up, but it's very rough
[05:17] Tod www.thestorydragon.com/adventure/thumbnail5.jpg is a sketch of some ruins
[05:18] Tod and the top three drawings on there are different views for island01.jpg
[05:18] Tod then one for island02.jpg
[05:20] Eskay That bar picture is very expressive.
[05:20] Tod thank you
[05:21] Ellington Needs more ELl chandelier swinging or some such
[05:22] Kario Okay, those cities that stretch underground or along the sides of cliffs strike me as being very appropriate.
[05:22] Ellington ZTC, keyo mentioned we are going to need some pretty distinctive capitals
[05:22] Ellington - the Z
[05:23] TommyChong img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/Paradogs/Fauxrates/dump2.jpg
[05:23] TommyChong oh
[05:23] Ellington <3
[05:23] TommyChong I dont have much this week
[05:25] Ellington 's ok
[05:25] Tod dude
[05:25] Mahmers I'd live there.
[05:25] Austin_J ....How does it stay up>
[05:25] TommyChong magic
[05:25] Mahmers Specifically, I'd live in a little hut on the tailtip and fish.
[05:26] Kario That's... probably not going to work for the world, but it's amazing.
[05:26] TommyChong img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/Paradogs/Fauxrates/dump3.jpg and this is what I have in mind from the last discussion
[05:26] TommyChong and its rough
[05:26] Kario I think we might be able to work krakenbone architecture into things.
[05:28] TommyChong I got the impression most of the locations are floating
[05:28] TommyChong and now not so
[05:28] Tod ah, you also did stripminetown
[05:29] Ellington Some floating, some not
[05:29] Ellington Pirate Island can be krakenmouth
[05:31] Kario Floating is probably a no-go with the world design we settled on.
[05:31] TommyChong SEE?
[05:31] Ellington really?
[05:31] Kario If someone can come up with a good reason why the laws of physics don't work... okay, fine, whatever.
[05:31] Kario But I think except for maybe one or two artificial stations, we probably won't have any.
[05:32] Ellington floating islands are cool!
[05:32] Kario And I can't imagine we'd have many, since those would be expensive to upkeep.
[05:32] TommyChong I dont know who to listen to anymore
[05:32] Austin_J Maybe some floaty thingy kept up by ancient ruins might work.
[05:32] Ellington I still vote for some floating islands
[05:33] matejcik SUPERCONDUCTIVE ORE UNDERNEATH MAGNETIC ISLAND
[05:34] matejcik that would be extra-fun to live on and fly planes around, haha
[05:34] Ellington ^
[05:34] Tod yeah, floating ruins!
[05:34] Ellington hows the thesis matej?
[05:34] Tod also floating dead whale @_@ that is so creepy
[05:34] matejcik Ellington: don't ask don't tell
[05:34] Ellington handavium matters not. It exists. therefore, floating islands get rule of cool'ed into existence
[05:35] Ellington please, please dont get in trouble matej
[05:35] TommyChong floating giant seashell
[05:35] Kario I'm not going to rule the idea out entirely. But there's going to need to be a good reason why they exist.
[05:35] TommyChong less haunting
[05:35] Kario In the meantime, we do need to focus on establishing our capitals.
[05:35] Kario Did the artists get my e-mail where I talked about what we discussed regarding how they're going to look?
[05:36] Ellington huge updrafts?
[05:36] TommyChong I think I did
[05:36] Tod my computer access has been a little limited, so I didn't get it until recently.
[05:37] Tod ah, it went out 3 days ago, anyway.
[05:38] Austin_J I'm pretty sure I did get it, but I don't actually remember it.
[05:38] Ellington i very much want floating islands, for the recordNot all of them.. maybe 30%?
[05:39] Kario Yeah, I was late getting it out.
[05:39] Tod I'd been working on what I had time to do from what was discussed from last week, though. If you'd like stuff from the email, I can get to it for next meeting.
[05:39] TommyChong and in one email it said 80%
[05:39] Kario But do you think you can get us something within the next week or two?
[05:39] Tod yeah, for next week, no problem.
[05:39] Kario I want everyone who's planning on making artistic contributions to try to get something up.
[05:40] Kario I want to see how you all interpret this.
[05:40] Tod sounds good Sorry I didn't get to it sooner.
[05:40] Kario We'll go from there and try to get some final pieces in.
[05:41] Tod is now a good time to sort out division of labor for final stuff?
[05:41] Eskay If dragons fly by magic, then can you build a flying island by building it on a dragon skeleton?
[05:42] TommyChong I thought dragons fly by turbofan.
[05:42] Kario It might be. Do you think it'll help speed up progress?
[05:43] Tod well, if we know who's doing island views, then other folks can focus on other concept art?
[05:44] Tod if we need to branch out, at this point. I'm not sure.
[05:45] Kario I don't think we've reached a point where we're branching out yet.
[05:46] Tod nods
[05:46] Kario We'll need to do character concepts at some point, but that is more of a finishing touch.
[05:48] Tod am looking forward to that part
[05:48] Kario But yeah, try to get capitals done for next week. I'd like to get visuals for us to work on, and try to hammer out a finished product within the next two or three weeks.
[05:49] Tod cool
[05:49] Kario Most of our primary writers are either absent or silent.
[05:49] Kario I find this disappointing.
[05:50] TommyChong I you want I can expand on the fishbone / stone roses thing I showed
[05:51] TommyChong with -actual- buildings
[05:51] TommyChong <.<
[05:52] Kario Hm. It's too nifty an idea to throw out. I'd like to see a sea monster skeleton turned *into* a large public building or park or something.
[05:52] TommyChong I was thinking about adding seashells/ coral reefs into the mix
[05:53] TommyChong but next week I'm semi-busy :<
[05:58] Kario Concepts for other islands are less of a priority.
[05:58] Kario Since, as I mentioned earlier, once we get capitals down, almost anything else is fair game.
[05:58] Kario Other areas are meant to be under competition, so they're less likely to fit the same molds.
[06:01] TommyChong 's why I'm asking about the stone rose thing
[06:02] TommyChong I dont want it to turn out like "what seismic weapon?"
[06:02] TommyChong like it did floating.
[06:03] Ellington wants floating... but everybody knows that
[06:03] Kario Remind me what the stone rose thing is?
[06:04] TommyChong was talking about this
[06:04] TommyChong img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/Paradogs/Fauxrates/dump3.jpg
[06:04] Austin_J I think there should be some floaties, but it should be reserved for a small handful of special places
[06:05] TommyChong that's not what I heard.
[06:05] TommyChong but eh whatever
[06:08] Kario The stone rose seems reasonable enough.
[06:09] Kario Maybe a mining or drilling location.
[06:10] TommyChong can I go ahead with it being a capitol then?
[06:11] Kario I think it's probably best if we keep the capitals relatively plain as far as land design goes.
[06:11] Burrito_Loco That doesn't seem to be a capital, what with the strip mine look
[06:11] Kario They're built to sustain civilizations.
[06:12] Kario To house populations.
[06:12] Kario To run governments.
[06:12] Ellington capitals often are built to impress also though
[06:12] Kario You don't build your governmental core somewhere where you're also harvesting resources.
[06:12] TommyChong ^^
[06:12] Burrito_Loco Indeed, they should be geographically somewhat bland, architecturally more exciting
[06:13] Ellington though medieval capitals are often built around a defensive location
[06:14] Mahmers A ford, a hill, an island in a river, a cliffside...
[06:14] TommyChong from the last meeting I got the impression that you wanted something more inaccessible
[06:14] Ellington confusion
[06:14] TommyChong *shrug*
[06:14] Kario Mmm.
[06:14] TommyChong [08:23] Kario Tommy, can you do a grim and depressing capitol city stretching out over sheer cliffs with steep walls to keep the populace "safe?"
[06:14] Kario When we were talking about cliffside buildings and waterfalls and the like, these are all very visually striking details.
[06:15] Kario Ohhhh. Okay, I need to clarify that.
[06:15] Ellington eyes the whips... eyes keyo..
[06:15] Kario My fault for being ambiguous.
[06:15] TommyChong <_>
[06:16] Kario Geographically, we want a pretty plain island, yes.
[06:16] Kario But the world has cliffs. Big cliffs. Every island is going to have cliffs that will kill you if you fall off of them.
[06:16] Ellington WHat about TC's fancy fairy tale style spire? It was cool
[06:17] Kario So our "Red" faction, being mostly concerned with keeping order and making sure people are secure, will have giant walls keeping you inside the city.
[06:17] Eskay This stone rose looks like an angrier, more urban version of the city from Riven.
[06:17] Kario Which is both safe for the people who live there and incredibly depressing.
[06:18] Kario Very monochromatic, all function and no form.
[06:18] Kario But these are people who are terrified for their lives after the cataclysmic war, and so they're happy just to be able to know that they're protected.
[06:18] Ellington what about giant propoganda? big red eagle painted on walls
[06:19] Burrito_Loco Would two headed be too obvious?
[06:19] Eskay Is it an opaque wall, or like a fence sort of thing?
[06:19] Ellington THREE HEADED!
[06:19] Kario I suppose that's open to interpretation.
[06:19] TommyChong fence sounds lovely
[06:20] Kario Personally I think of it as something like a giant seawall, but I want to see what other people think of and create for us.
[06:20] Austin_J Berlin Wall in the sky!
[06:21] Ellington i am a flying jelly donut
[06:22] Ellington and he said 'tear this wall down!' and they did, right then and there. Cause Reganomics
[06:24] TommyChong www.mangareader.net/shingeki-no-kyojin/5/6
[06:24] Kario Okay, so let's work on hammering this part out now.
[06:24] TommyChong re:wall
[06:24] Kario Are there any questions the artists have about the capitals?
[06:24] TommyChong is it something like that
[06:24] Kario Anything you need to know to try to get visions down on paper?
[06:25] Burrito_Loco 's a lot of walls
[06:25] Tod Would you prefer many rougher sketches, or a smaller number of more developed drawings?
[06:25] Tod (which would also be sketches... but, hopefully you know what I mean)
[06:26] Kario Mostly I'm just thinking of one big wall or fence around the perimeter.
[06:26] Kario And personally, I'd prefer one really good piece for each capital.
[06:27] Tod nods. But ink or pencil drawings are still okay for this, yeah? I won't really have time for more than that, this week.
[06:27] Kario Yeah, sure. I'm looking at getting roughs out this week and something more finished next week.
[06:27] Burrito_Loco I demand audio-visual in 3-D with smells
[06:27] Kario Since we'll probably be revising whatever comes in next time
[06:27] TommyChong this high? www.mangareader.net/shingeki-no-kyojin/5/12
[06:27] Ellington Tod does well (in my experience) with a rough idea, then a sketch or three
[06:28] Ellington loves his tod art on his wall
[06:28] Kario Maybe! That strikes me as excessive, but excessive could be good.
[06:29] TommyChong k
[06:30] Kario Any other questions about our concepts?
[06:31] Walther_Walrus I like that wall height. Pushing it right to the edges of surreal.
[06:31] TommyChong YOU
[06:31] Walther_Walrus Right at the rough, fuzzy edges of fantasy and surreality is where I want to be.
[06:31] Burrito_Loco Well, if they're on the side of a cliff you get a major wall bonus
[06:36] TommyChong ok, last page I'm foing to pull from that manga
[06:36] TommyChong this big? www.mangareader.net/shingeki-no-kyojin/5/40
[06:36] TommyChong *going
[06:37] Kario Mmm. The island itself is probably not especially large.
[06:37] Walther_Walrus I dunno bout that. I tend to think we'd be a bit resource and labor poor to pull off something that large.
[06:38] Burrito_Loco I'm thinking slightly cramped
[06:38] Ellington how long after the cataclysm is this world?
[06:38] TommyChong only the innermost rings then
[06:38] Walther_Walrus I was thinking ~400 years
[06:39] Burrito_Loco Their paranoid, even if they could build sprawling they wouldn't
[06:39] Walther_Walrus Yes
[06:39] Burrito_Loco they're
[06:39] Burrito_Loco >.>
[06:39] Burrito_Loco <.<
[06:39] Walther_Walrus And the island could certainly be that large, if we're working strictly on arguments from what is necessary to support an industrial-size population with room to continue to grow. As opposed to, say, aesthetics.
[06:40] Burrito_Loco Well, they might import food
[06:40] TommyChong anymore cramped I'd imagine a lot of V/STOL aircrafts
[06:41] Walther_Walrus The city is built cramped, not necessarily that the island its on is cramped
[06:41] Ellington and like skyrates, the island we see does not have to be 100% accurate
[06:41] Burrito_Loco Probably one or two runways inside the rest outside locked down with portcullises
[06:42] Kario The *average* spire has a 69.5 km diameter up top, assuming it's round.
[06:43] Burrito_Loco ~300 sq km?
[06:43] Kario ~3800.
[06:43] Kario Which is more than twice as big as O'ahu.
[06:44] Burrito_Loco Somewhere I lost a zero...
[06:44] Walther_Walrus goes looking for the doc where he worked out his numbers
[06:44] Austin_J Isn't that roughly the size of the Just Cause 2 playable area?
[06:46] matejcik the average spire is pretty damn huge, methinks
[06:46] TommyChong www.mangareader.net/kyoukai-senjou-no-rinbo/1/9
[06:46] TommyChong hmmmmm
[06:47] Walther_Walrus As huge as Kario has posited, that's not actually that big on a global scale
[06:47] TommyChong architecture
[06:47] matejcik obviously, but i assumed that spires are city-sized, not county-sized
[06:48] Kario That strikes me as more of a green or a blue.
[06:48] Walther_Walrus A planet with 1/8th as much land as the Earth divided up into 500 chunks makes each chunk actually 10 times larger than that, right around 38,000 square klicks.
[06:48] TommyChong ?
[06:48] Kario Blue is what I'm feeling.
[06:48] Burrito_Loco White and terracotta tiles?
[06:48] Burrito_Loco Yeah
[06:49] Burrito_Loco Not at all obviously industrial
[06:49] Kario 38,000? Did *I* miss a zero?
[06:49] Burrito_Loco No
[06:49] Walther_Walrus I don't know, I don't know where you started your math from
[06:49] Kario Surface area of Earth times .037, divided by 500.
[06:50] Walther_Walrus I think you did miss a zero, then.
[06:50] Kario Yes I did. My calculator on my phone only holds eight digits.
[06:50] Burrito_Loco
[06:51] Burrito_Loco I think we should keep sizes down.
[06:51] Kario Okay, so we're looking at up to a 220 km diameter.
[06:51] Burrito_Loco Which is kinda huge
[06:52] Kario This is about as large as Kyushu.
[06:52] TommyChong not-so-cramped
[06:52] Eskay Though how huge it _feels_ depends on the population it's supporting.
[06:52] Kario en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyushu
[06:54] matejcik well first of all, with planes like cr-4p you'd have trouble travelling around a single spire
[06:54] matejcik which would mean that you'd have to have the spires closer together than they are big
[06:55] Kario Eh, there were prop planes that made transatlantic flights.
[06:55] matejcik yes, but they were not cr-4p
[06:56] matejcik what i mean to say is that at least in my mind, islands should be significantly smaller than distances between them
[06:56] Burrito_Loco ^
[06:56] Walther_Walrus Yeah, I'm trying to figure out the math to figure the average distance between chunks of this size
[06:56] matejcik i suspect there's a whole lot of rational arguments for that, but i can't be bothered to come up with any right now
[06:57] Kario Well, no, they should be.
[06:57] Kario Also, I don't think we're looking at average distance.
[06:57] Kario Pre-cataclysm, the land was divided up into continental masses.
[06:57] Burrito_Loco I'd rather see, say a shattered continent that is made up of Kauai sized islands and smaller and we haven't the tech to find other clusters
[06:57] Walther_Walrus we're not, but it gives us an order of magnitude area to look at.
[06:58] Kario Actually, even with my missing a zero, a ~3800 sq-km island is pretty damn big.
[06:58] matejcik BL: that figures for 21km diameter? that seems like much saner number than Kario's 65
[06:59] Burrito_Loco Sounds about right
[06:59] Walther_Walrus 500 islands evenly spread across the globe would be ~1140 kilometers apart, center to center.
[06:59] matejcik with "and smaller" being the key phrase ;e)
[06:59] Burrito_Loco In fact, the South Pacific in general might be a good model
[06:59] TommyChong what about this
[06:59] TommyChong www.furaffinity.net/view/6689519
[07:00] Burrito_Loco Yeah, but those walls might mark the edge of the islet
[07:01] Burrito_Loco and/or more regimented and ordered
[07:01] Walther_Walrus The capital had to sustain itself for 300 years before the reinvention of flight.
[07:01] Kario I'm thinking there'd be an interesting mix of old and new architecture.
[07:01] matejcik Walther_Walrus: good point
[07:02] Kario Some of the older buildings would be stone. Newer buildings, especially in red and green, would gravitate more towards iron.
[07:02] Burrito_Loco the current capital might not
[07:02] Kario I'd expect blue to have a stronger sense of historical preservation.
[07:02] Burrito_Loco In fact, I like the idea of someone or something destroying the original red capital
[07:03] Burrito_Loco So they rebuilt in on an easily defensible skylet that relies on massive food reserves to withstand siege
[07:03] Kario Hm. I suppose that would help to fuel the paranoia and desire for security.
[07:03] Walther_Walrus That's a fun idea, actually.
[07:03] Burrito_Loco Right
[07:03] Ellington origional capitol destruction does give paranoia justification
[07:03] Eskay (Are we deliberately giving the same three factions the same three color-names?)
[07:03] Kario No, we're coming up with better names when we get more details.
[07:03] TommyChong temp
[07:03] Walther_Walrus No, it's just convenient
[07:04] Kario But the basic ideologies line up in a fairly similar fashion, so the color-coded names work as a placeholder while we discuss concepts.
[07:04] Burrito_Loco Blue would, yes be an ancient hodgepodge covering every architectural style since we started rebuilding and maybe even some stuff from before
[07:04] Ellington for the record: My cessna 172 lightly loaded gets between 100-130 (with tailwind) MPH and can max out at about 3-400 miles before refuelling
[07:05] Burrito_Loco Green...I dunno. Steampunk/victorian chic appeals to me or Dickensian maybe
[07:05] Walther_Walrus If there's a thousand chunks, an even spread means an average distance of 806 kilometers center to center.
[07:05] Kario Yeah, I'm thinking 18th-19th century London, somehow.
[07:05] Burrito_Loco Yeah, but your Cessna gets better mileage than an old junker in all likelihood
[07:05] matejcik green = the latest and greatest in current "architectural fashion"
[07:05] Burrito_Loco That's what I'm thinking, Kario
[07:05] Ellington agreed
[07:06] Burrito_Loco Green's capital might also have moved to be better positioned for trade
[07:06] Ellington but yeah.. methinks yal worldbuildery types are getting too involed in math
[07:06] Walther_Walrus 2000 chunks yields 570 kilometers
[07:06] Eskay Between the three, you want design themes like "industrial" and "sleek" and something contrasting with those two?
[07:07] Burrito_Loco It's not a whole world, I think we should think South Pacific or Caribbean
[07:07] matejcik BL: and maybe not, because capital is not necessarily the trade hub
[07:07] Burrito_Loco True
[07:07] Walther_Walrus A chunk doesn't have to be a solid landmass, either. It could itself be broken up, but tied together like some of the skylands in skyrates are three or four pieces of rock bridged.
[07:07] Kario Well, we actually already worked out vague aesthetics last week in our discussion.
[07:07] Burrito_Loco Yeah
[07:07] Kario We're now trying to refine these for our artists to work off of.
[07:07] TommyChong number confuses me.
[07:08] matejcik Walther_Walrus: even spread is probably wrong assumption
[07:08] Burrito_Loco Indeed, the upshot was: dark, heavy industrial for Red, glory days of Imperialism for Green and Mediterranean for Blue
[07:08] Kario In any event, it's fairly clear at this point that the islands will be much larger than what the players will actually be working with.
[07:08] Burrito_Loco Fo' sho'
[07:09] Burrito_Loco But I mean even for art/flavor
[07:09] Burrito_Loco Something the size of a state is a wee bit big
[07:09] Eskay I don't knwo what "glory days of Imperialism" or "Mediterranean" looks like as a design aesthetic.
[07:09] Kario Think 18th-19th century Western Europe for the former.
[07:10] Tod conversation isn't confusing me - I had to leave early last week and missed a lot of this discussion, and am quietly reading and visualizing what I'm going to draw for next week.
[07:10] Burrito_Loco think modernesque Greek
[07:10] Kario The latter, we want something very open that encourages public interaction. Like the agora in Athens, or the gondolas in Venice, or the Champs du Elysse.
[07:10] Kario (sp?)
[07:10] Burrito_Loco White washed walls, red tile roofs
[07:10] Burrito_Loco Open courtyards
[07:11] Ellington Pirate island archetecture?/me loves the Carribean
[07:12] Kario Definitely a possibility, but not relevant to the capitals.
[07:12] Ellington capitals, no
[07:12] Kario Something to add on our list of things to draw later.
[07:12] Kario And I still like the idea of a krakenbone city.
[07:12] Eskay Sounds neat, but different from what you were saying earlier with hodgepodges 'n stuff.
[07:12] Burrito_Loco Artisanal as opposed to industrial
[07:13] Burrito_Loco Well, they'd have the equivalent of old Greek and Roman stuff laying about
[07:13] Kario Hodgepodge just refers to how, if the city sprang up organically from a small pocket of civilization, a few older buildings would be preserved.
[07:14] Burrito_Loco Yeah
[07:14] Burrito_Loco And the city itself wouldn't have effective total ordering
[07:15] Kario Just sort of sprawl out as it needed to grow.
[07:15] Burrito_Loco Yup
[07:16] Eskay Okay, thanks.
[07:16] Eskay Now I'm picturing one ("blue") in stone, one ("red") in iron, and one ("green") in wood.
[07:17] Eskay Or possibly brick.
[07:17] Burrito_Loco I suppose that's not the worst gross simplification
[07:17] Eskay I'm less sure what that comes out as plane-side, but that's not necessarily as important now.
[07:17] Burrito_Loco I'm thinking more "clay and tile," "iron and stone", and "brass and brick"
[07:18] Burrito_Loco The planes will probably be largely similar as they are in this world
[07:19] Burrito_Loco Aerodynamics are a harsh mistress
[07:20] Eskay It sounds like switching the climates from Skyrates -- this time Green gets the temperate weather, whereas Red gets the bleak winter world.
[07:20] Eskay Possibly with more fogs and rains on Green than Red got in Skyrates.
[07:20] Burrito_Loco Well, that's superimposing our soviet preconceptions
[07:20] Burrito_Loco The Reds are harsh and ascetic
[07:21] Burrito_Loco As easily Spartan as Soviet
[07:21] Eskay Well, you don't want to build with iron too much in hotter climes.
[07:21] Burrito_Loco Just gotta keep it treated
[07:21] matejcik iron makes poor insulation, so you don't want much of it in winter either
[07:22] Burrito_Loco You reinforce with iron, you don't built solely with it
[07:22] Austin_J "Harsh and ascetic" makes me think desert-related... hmm... giant Foreign Legion fort with airstrips?
[07:23] Burrito_Loco Just saying, they aren't climate bound
[07:23] Eskay Mhm.
[07:23] matejcik harsh & ascetic makes me think of tibetian temples, actually
[07:23] Eskay Brass goes well with fog, though.
[07:23] Burrito_Loco If we're sticking with the Mediterranean theme with Blue their capital needs to be in that vein
[07:23] Burrito_Loco I really like the idea of Green's capital as Dickensian London
[07:24] Burrito_Loco Which would, yes, be rainy and foggy
[07:24] Ellington rainy and foggy tives tons of time to plot
[07:25] Eskay Whereas Mediterranean weather gives you more time to go out and tinker with planes?
[07:25] Kario I think of Red as Balkan.
[07:26] Ellington bright and sunny is good flying weather, yes
[07:26] Kario Neo-blue =/= science-y
[07:27] Kario I'd think all three cultures would be leery of too much tinkering after having watched most of the land blow up.
[07:27] Burrito_Loco indeed, more strictly artisanal, so yes a few scientist/tinkerer types, but also many, you know, artisans
[07:27] Burrito_Loco They have the best quality goods
[07:27] Burrito_Loco But you better be ready to pay four times as much and wait three times as long
[07:28] Kario (Which is why I want to get to trade goods later, and I'm thinking we'll do that next week.)
[07:29] Ellington yeah, at this point i dont have the 4 hours trade will take
[07:32] Ellington ...though... what can be so complicated about ir?
[07:32] Kario Lots.
[07:32] Ellington le sigh
[07:33] Kario Do our artists have any other questions?
[07:33] Kario Or anyone else who missed last week's discussion, for that matter.
[07:33] Ellington did i miss anything vital after i had to leave?
[07:34] Kario Most of that discussion was covered just now.
[07:34] Ellington k
[07:34] Kario The one point that wasn't is something that I want the worldbuilders to work on for next week.
[07:34] Kario Think about what *kinds* of people would choose to band together under the RGB principles.
[07:35] Kario Like we've pretty firmly established that the neo-Red capital got torched or vandalized or something somehow. So they're very concerned with their own security after losing most of their world and then their home city, too.
[07:35] Kario So they *like* this idea.
[07:35] Kario Similarly, what motivates the green and blue folks?
[07:35] Ellington but was it outsiders or... a cabal of insiders (DUN DUN DUNNNN!)
[07:36] Kario Start thinking about things like that, because we want to build fully realized nations.
[07:36] Ellington whats neo green and neo blue again?
[07:36] Kario Players should choose cultures and histories and characters, not ideologies.
[07:37] Kario I'm going to let someone else cover that for now. I'll be back later to continue discussion with whoever's around, but I need to grab some food in the meantime.
[07:37] Austin_J As do I, honestly
[07:38] matejcik neo green = mercantilism / imperialism / old money, a.k.a. east india trading company
[07:38] matejcik neo blue = egalitarian social welfare sort-of-utopian state, making people happy is our goal
[07:38] Ellington nBlue probably resents outside influences
[07:39] matejcik right, because their way is the true way
[07:39] Ellington and the others bring stryfe and money grubbing and books and and and
[07:40] matejcik yup. also, they're not so keen on all that newfangled technology stuff, because what is wrong with that old one
[07:40] matejcik therefore, more artisans than engineers
[07:41] Austin_J This is sounding a bit like ideas that were tossed about for refining Purple leading up to the Hidden War storyline.
[07:43] Walther_Walrus Put two ill-defined factions in blender, puree for a few weeks, pour out delicious well-defined faction.
[07:44] Ellington nGreen, aside from MONEY can be adventure! I mean, if you wanted to adventure pre 1900 (or so), East India was pretty much the way to go.
[07:45] matejcik hmmmm, exploration to find new resources and maybe even new markets?
[07:45] Burrito_Loco They stand for mercantilist empire
[07:45] Burrito_Loco Yup
[07:45] Burrito_Loco They explore for the same reason colonial Europe explored
[07:45] Burrito_Loco new stuff to sell, new people to sell the old stuff to
[07:46] TommyChong I just want to push for jamesngart.com/Images/ART/ImperialAirship.jpg
[07:46] Burrito_Loco Ummm
[07:46] SorenF hi guys
[07:46] Burrito_Loco Are we going DBZ?
[07:47] Burrito_Loco Errr
[07:48] Burrito_Loco Wow
[07:48] Burrito_Loco Final Fantasy
[07:48] Burrito_Loco I have no idea where DBZ came from
[07:48] TommyChong ...
[07:48] Kario That's a cool design. I don't know if we have room for it, but again, I like it.
[07:48] TommyChong shelf then
[07:48] SorenF maybe the motif of the buildings on the airship reminded you of DBZ?
[07:49] Kario As said earlier, the problem with anything floating is upkeep.
[07:49] Kario First of all, the mechanics of what it is and why it floats have to be established.
[07:50] TommyChong I'm not exactly talking about floating
[07:50] SorenF would they need to land from time to time? or is this some perpetual floating thing? (sorry if this has been described earlier )
[07:50] matejcik well it's an airship and it floats because it's full of lighter-than-air gas
[07:50] TommyChong more style and architecture
[07:50] Kario Secondly, as an artificial construct, it has no natural resources and everything has to be imported.
[07:51] Kario So there's got to be a real reason why you want this floating thing here at this location.
[07:51] matejcik well, the architecture is pretty, the overall style not so much but that's a matter of taste ... which faction do you think this goes with?
[07:51] Kario Style and architecture-wise, I think it's awesome and would make an interesting site for competition, if we want to go that route.
[07:51] SorenF sits back for a while trying to catch up some how
[07:52] TommyChong Actually I'm thinking green
[07:52] TommyChong but eh
[07:52] matejcik Kario: this one is obviously a display of wealth and power. for which it makes a lot of sense to build something so expensive to maintain and so unwieldy to fly
[07:52] Kario I could see it as a green colony.
[07:52] SorenF I agree
[07:53] matejcik on the other hand, why not cast this as a style for Blue?
[07:53] Ellington Also, in worldbuilding: it IS ok to have it out there and wait for people to make explinations you like
[07:53] Ellington its too fancy eletist for blue?
[07:53] matejcik not the airship, just the buildings
[07:54] Ellington or, lampshade it: we have no idea why the islands float. Magic? unlikely. uhh... wormhole null gravity? sure!
[07:54] matejcik plus the dragonhead, that's obviously artisanal thing
[07:54] Kario Hm.
[07:54] TommyChong yup
[07:54] Ellington Asian societys are more pluralistic than western ones which tend to be more individualistic
[07:54] TommyChong distinct
[07:54] TommyChong etc
[07:54] Kario I see where you're coming from with this.
[07:55] Kario I can go with it as a blue style, too.
[07:55] Ellington I dont see the dragon or castle as blue though
[07:55] Kario Though again, other styles can be included and drawn up into city-spires in the future and be placed anywhere.
[07:56] Kario Walther, how much time has passed since we started flying again?
[07:56] SorenF I see dragon and castle a bit more purp?
[07:57] Burrito_Loco Places that aren't the capitals don't have to strictly adhere to the capital aesthetic
[07:57] Kario I'm having other ideas about neutral locations that might tie into a different mechanic for inter-group competition.
[07:57] matejcik SorenF: there is no purple. you missed the faction descriptions?
[07:57] SorenF apparently so...
[07:58] TommyChong he missed a lot of things. :3
[07:58] SorenF sorry
[07:58] Burrito_Loco We're back to three
[07:58] SorenF been busy as of late
[07:58] Kario (for that matter, RGB are just code names until we come up with real names for these primitive nations.)
[07:59] matejcik hah. well, in short: red are militarists concerned with security. blue are egalitarians concerned with their people's well being. green are mercantilist imperialists concerned with making money and keeping it.
[07:59] Ellington we basically are re-purposing RGB
[07:59] SorenF ah ok. thanks ^^
[07:59] Eskay This is fun, but I gotta bounce. Later, all!
[07:59] matejcik yup. at this point we're supposed to flesh them out in detail, so that they become sensible *nations* as opposed to ideologies
[07:59] matejcik seeya Eskay
[08:00] Kario To help you catch up to speed, Soren, we're holding meetings every Sunday at around 4:00 Eastern time, and Talon or I or someone will send out summary e-mail messages.
[08:02] Kario One of us can fill you in on what we've done to this point, but if you want to contribute to the project, it's going to be important to either make the meetings or get your own input in via e-mail from this point.
[08:02] SorenF I think imput via emails would be most reliable considering how my following weeks are starting to look
[08:03] SorenF I have half a log from last week's meeting thanks to Tommy
[08:03] Kario Okay. I'll make it a point to try to be better about getting messages out sooner rather than later, unless Talon wants to volunteer, seeing as he's done an excellent job in prior weeks.
[08:03] Kario hints.
[08:04] Ellington dfont be too abusive to people who cant mnake meeting, Keyo... i cant make them all myself
[08:04] Burrito_Loco Not abusive
[08:04] Ellington urgh, hate this tiny keyboard
[08:04] Burrito_Loco But it's true
[08:04] matejcik and i was just about to suggest you lay off the booze Ell ;e)
[08:04] TommyChong hee hee
[08:05] SorenF indeed. good thing my class is in the afternon. kind of helps me somewhat to get here as long as it's this time ish <_<
[08:05] Kario Yeah, that's not a problem. I know I won't be able to make all of them either.
[08:05] Kario But we need everyone who's going to be a part of this project to stay involved, if not at the meeting, than via regular correspondence.
[08:06] SorenF I agree with that.
[08:06] SorenF I'm quite frustrated when I want to be a part of something yet time differences make it hard for me to attend stuff.
[08:06] Tod can make it next week. I should probably take off now, though.
[08:06] Kario Yeah, I hear you on that. >.>
[08:06] Tod will work on more arts.
[08:07] Ellington be tod! thanks for the awesome
[08:07] Kario Okay. So the tentative agenda for next week is to finish more work on the capitals and to start discussing the economy.
[08:07] SorenF See you Tod
[08:07] Tod seeyah, guys!
