Just something I was idly thinking about a few minutes ago and thought I'd get out of my head;
Each plane has a number of locations that can be upgraded, modified and replaced. Any modification can be obtained at any location, but not every plane can use every modification - not a whole lot of good putting high-lift wings on an airship, or additional ammo stocks on a plane with no guns, for example. On the other hand, some modifications are simple and almost all planes can use them, like bolting on extra armour.
Only one modification can be installed in a given location at any time, but certain planes might have multiples of a location if they're particularly large. Others might lack a particular location; airships don't usually have wings, just maneuvering surfaces. Too small to add extra ammo or fuel reserves, in most cases.
Modifications do not transfer between aircraft, but do increase craft resale value, and can be uninstalled to get some of your cash back. You can't hold onto them or keep them in some kind of inventory; either they're installed or they aren't, so choose wisely.
Example locations;
Wings - Internal; The internal wing slot is generally used for additional fuel tanks or ammo reserves. This is the result of squeezing more into the remaining space available.
Wings - External; The external wing slot is used for parts similar to Skyrates' High-Lift and High-Performance Wings, as it represents modification of the whole wing surface. It could also be used for light armour improvements.
Wings - Hardpoints; The hardpoint wing slots are used for drop tanks, gun pods, and so on. They could also hold radar pods, if radar is ever important.
Hull - Internal; Internal hull modifications can range from reinforced/lightweight structural components to cargo bay optimizations or additional ammo reserves. Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else probably goes here.
Hull - External; External hull modifications include streamlining, reshaped hulls, external fuel tanks, cargo pods strapped directly to the hull, and upgraded armour - be it riveted on in a hurry or properly integrated.
Engines; I shouldn't need to explain what you can do with the Engine slot, should I?
Props; Similarly. You can install various kinds of prop with all sorts of fun bonuses. This could probably be merged with the engine slot if need be.
Misc; Paintjobs, stickers, etc.
